Liver transplantation sumptuary and equipment support is one of the Heyat Omana Arzi or HOA (Board of Trustees for Patients Treatments with currency saving)  operational programs in order to provide prerequisites for treating patients domestically as  one of the supreme goals  mentioned in HOA law of formation.

 

In Iran, the  first liver transplant was performed in 1995 by Seyed Ali Malek Hosseini  at the Namazi Hospital in Shiraz.Dr Malek Hosseini completed his training at Pittsburgh Hospital under the supervision of Thomas Earl Starzl  who performed the first human liver transplant in the world.

 

Nowadays, liver transplantation is performed in eight University-affiliated medical center

All over of the country as follows:

1) Abu Ali Sina Shiraz Organ Transplant Hospital

2) Hazrat Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex in Tehran

3) Ayatollah Taleghani Medical Education Center in Tehran

4) Shahid Afzalipour Medical and Educational Center, Kerman

5) Montaserieh Organ Transplant Hospital of Mashhad

6) Al-Zahra Medical Center in Isfahan

7) Golestan Educational and Medical Center in Ahvaz

8) Firoozgar Tehran Medical Training Center

 

The estimated cost of a liver transplant in the United States is about $ 580,000. This operation is done in Turkey with cost of $ 100,000 and the cost of doing it in India is about $ 50,000. In Iran with the support of the Ministry of Health and HOA, Liver transplantation is done at a much lower cost than in other countries.

 

HOA has supported 6,963 liver transplants over the past 12 years (2008-2019).

HOA supports liver transplantation in the following areas:

 

  • Providing part of the cost of hoteling and hospital treatment
  • Supply of items needed for transplantation such as transplant tissue preservation solutions, transplant tissue maintenance bags (organ bag) and suction drains
  • Help to equip the transplant sections
